Bulldog runs to glory in final year

Camren Fischer went the distance in his senior season at Fayetteville. The Bulldogs senior won four individual state championships (three in track and field, one in cross country) and is this year's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas Preps Male Athlete of the Year. "It was a lot of fun," said Fischer, who will compete in cross country at Princeton in the fall. "Every year got better." Fischer was the state cross country champion in Class 6A, delivering a time of 16 minutes, 19.90 seconds at the state meet in November at Hot Springs. In the Class 6A state track and field meet in May at Pearcy, Fischer earned individual state titles in the 800 meters (1:56.39), 1,600 (4:23.01) and 3,200. He set the state record in the 3,200 by clocking a 9:23.58. Also, Fischer was part of Fayetteville's 3,200 relay team that placed sixth. At the Meet of Champions on May 11 in Pearcy, Fischer's final race for the Bulldogs resulted in a meet record in the 1,600 with a time of 4:11.61. His time bested Rogers' Cameron Efurd's mark of 4:14.78 in 2010. "He's a great athlete," Fayetteville cross country Coach Michelle Fyfe said. "His mindset is perfect and he's confident. He's the best kid." Fyfe said Fischer has made himself into the runner that he is thanks to his sleeping patterns and his eating habits. "He's a well-balanced kid admittedly for his age," Fyfe said. Fischer's favorite highlight of the 2018-19 season was Fayetteville winning the boys state championship in Class 6A track and field in May. The Bulldogs outpointed Bentonville 158.5-110.5. "We were so happy and so proud of everybody," Fischer said. When it comes to his favorite event in running, it's the mile, i.e. the 1,600, for Fischer. "Everybody knows about the 100 or the mile," Fischer said. "I enjoy the mile a lot more." Fischer got involved in running when he was 12 years old by running with his family. It was in his sophomore season when he realized that he could possibly compete at the NCAA Division I level in cross country and on the national level. Competing at Princeton as well as the national level in events such as the Festival of Miles in St. Louis is something Fischer said he is looking forward to. He had a personal best time of 4:09.56 in the 1,600 at the Festival of Miles on May 30. I've always looked at it to better myself," Fischer said. "I love to compete. College will test me." Fyfe said she is proud of Fischer's success. Fayetteville has had several athletes in multiple sports participate in Division I athletics, and she said she's glad Fischer is one of them. She said Fischer's story can be an inspiration for future athletes in her program. "It shows what hard work can do," Fyfe said. "He's a good role model for the community in Fayetteville."...

Bulldogs please new coach

The first chapter for Fayetteville football under Casey Dick is in the books, highlighted by Friday's spring game. "I thought our defensive line, really our front seven, did a fantastic job," said Dick, who was hired in April to replace Billy Dawson, who resigned to enter private business. "Overall, I was pleased with our work ethic. Our players came in with an awesome mindset and they continued to get better." Quinn McClain and Hank Gibbs both took snaps at quarterback and wide receiver Beau Stuckey played some in the secondary during spring practices. "The quarterback position is one of the toughest to play because they've got to understand everything within our offense," Dick said. "It's tough, especially learning a new system, but our quarterback play improved every day." Fayetteville will play in 7-on-7 tournaments at Alma in June and Shiloh Christian in July. Dick will make his coaching debut for Fayetteville at home against St. John's Vianney of Kirkwood, Mo., on Friday, Aug. 30....

Rachel Studdard scored with 26:28 left in the second half, powering the Lady Hornets to a victory over the Lady Bulldogs. "I think we came out timid and not ready to fight right away, and so we allowed them the opportunity to get a little more confident," Bryant Coach Nicole Inman said. Studdard's game-winner came on a corner kick that was cleared from the goal area and sent over Fayetteville goalkeeper Perry Flannigan. Bryant was in control for a large part of the game, with the Fayetteville defense in a bend-but-don't-break mentality throughout. Offensively, Fayetteville had only three shots on goal....

Springdale Har-ber rolls over Fayetteville

Springdale Har-Ber right-hander Landon McAllister got just enough support from his teammates nine days ago to defeat Fayetteville. The Wildcats gave him a lot more than he needed Friday afternoon in their 12-1 run-rule victory over the Purple Bulldogs to advance to the Class 6A state baseball semifinals at Veterans Park. Har-Ber (24-7) will now take on Cabot (23-5) at 2:30 today in the semifinals. North Little Rock will take on Bentonville West in today's semifinals. Both games will be played simultaneously, beginning at 2:30. North Little Rock and West will play on the north field, while Har-Ber and Cabot will play on the south field. The Connors State signee acknowledged pitching with a big lead is less stressful. But he also said his team was confident thanks to the earlier victory. "It's pretty aggravated when I have to keep grinding," said McAllister, who beat Fayetteville 2-1 on May 1. "I love just getting a leading and pitching with a lead. It's great. "We changed a few things on a couple of guys, but not a lot. It just all worked out." His teammates obliged with a six-run top of the second against Fayetteville starter Ethan Trivitt and the Wildcats never looked back. Lead-off man Hunter Wood and Kirby Jenkins drove in two runs each in the big inning, while Clay Burtrum added an RBI-single for a 6-0 lead. The hit parade continued to the tune of 11 hits over five innings. Arkansas signee Blake Adams punctuated it with a long two-run home run in the top of the fifth. Wood finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored. Adams, Burtrum and Charlie Acuff added two hits each. Jenkins also drove in three runs. Har-Ber coach Ron Bradley said his team has come around offensively over the last couple of weeks and changing some routines has really paid off. "We spent a lot of time hitting the curveball off the machine," Bradley said. "We went away from it, and it's really been bothering us, and the last two weeks it just seems like we're seeing the ball better. We're getting better cuts. "It just seemed like today every time we needed a big hit, we came through. We had a tendency in the past to leave a lot of runners on. Today we were able to separate ourselves and Landon did a great job. Just a good performance all the way around." That was plenty for McAllister. He allowed a run on four hits, struck out three and walked three over five innings to get the win. Jeff Sinacore went 2-for-2 with a solo home run for Fayetteville, the 6A-West co-champions and No. 1 seed. Har-Ber 060 33 -- 12 11 1 Fayetteville 001 00 -- 1 4 2 McAllister and Kimbel; Trivitt, Gibbs (3), Davenport (4) and Turner. W-McAllister. L-Trivitt. HRs- Har-Ber, Adams, Fayetteville, Sinacore....
